Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment and Training is seeking Elders, Mentors and Guest Speakers for our Essential Skills Program. Essential Skills are the skills needed for work, learning and life. They provide the foundation for learning all other skills and enable people to evolve with their jobs and adapt to workplace change. Honorarium will be provided for all workshops.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate an understanding of and respect for the histories, traditions and cultures of Indigenous peoples, communities and nations
  • Facilitate cultural workshops and occasional in-class teachings
  • Integrate Indigenous worldview, ethics, values, principles, and cultural/traditional/spiritual teachings to provide guidance to both individuals and groups
  • Ability to coach and mentor students to aide in professional development
  • Ability and willingness to communicate what you know
  • Ability to understand and relate to others
  • Ability to provide insight and culturally appropriate support to students in making informed decisions

Qualifications

Required:

  • Strong knowledge and sensitivity to Indigenous issues, communities, values, traditions, Cultural norms and practices
  • Demonstrated knowledge and familiarity of the Aboriginal community and the services available in the Greater Toronto Area
  • Good organizational skills including resource and time management
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to provide training and facilitation for groups
  • 3 – 5 years of instructional or training facilitation experience
  • Minimum five years of experience as a community-recognized Indigenous Elder sharing cultural knowledge
