$20/hour for up to 20 hours per week, combination in person and virtual

Bawaajigewin Aboriginal Community Circle is a community-based organization dedicated to empowering and supporting Indigenous individuals and the communities in which they live and heal. We are committed to fostering meaningful relationships built on mutual trust and respectful collaboration working with knowledge keepers, elders, community members, and partner agencies to provide a holistic approach when working within the urban Indigenous community of Durham Region.
The recent acquisition of our new space at 836 Glen Street in Oshawa marks an exciting phase of development for our agency and as such we are seeking to hire a dedicated and passionate individual to join our team.
The Indigenous Administrative Assistant will play a key role in supporting the development and Coordination of workshops, ceremonies and events while providing administration support to the board. Tasks will also include assisting in establishing a volunteer database to help address the growing need for community volunteers to assist with grant fulfillment, maintaining relationships with community partners and providing staffing to the Glen Street location.
Successful candidates should possess the following skills and qualifications:
Education
- An informed awareness of Indigenous histories, cultures, and relational protocols with strong connections to Indigenous communities
- A combination of education and relevant experience (i.e., A College Diploma or certificate with 1- 4 years of relevant experience)
- Some understanding of the geography and relational organization of Indigenous Peoples in the Durham region
- A basic understanding of historical and contemporary processes of colonization, as well as the multigenerational impacts of these experiences on Indigenous peoples
Experience and Skills
- Minimum of one – four years’ administrative experience supporting the organization of events, programs, and services
- Computer experience required, including experience with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams), Mail Chip, and Google including Google Docs and Social Media Platforms
- Proven ability to work successfully with broad groups and individuals, including Indigenous individuals, families and communities, non-Indigenous people and organizations, and local service providers.
- Understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing, being, seeing, and doing and knowledge of current aims for community development• Strong written and oral communication skills
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment
- Strong organizational and time management skills
Requirements:
- Ability to work from the 836 Glen Street location in Oshawa as well as remotely
- Some evening and weekend work required
- Driver’s license and access to insured vehicle
• This will be a very active position that will require lifting, sitting, standing, harvesting of medicines on the land, carrying supplies up to 50 lbs. in diverse program spaces including indoors and outdoors on the land in rough terrain
Responsibilities:
- Advertise community engagement events and provide support to ensure all social media is monitored and maintained
- Maintain accurate records of program activity attendance, budgets, participant registration, and information
- Participate in monthly board meetings and provide updates on the activities completed, upcoming events, and any other administration business to be addressed by the board
- Assist in the management and maintenance of the 836 Glen Street space ensuring that it is open for community member access, and supportive services when requested
- Provide excellent client services in a professional, trauma-informed, and culturally safe way to ensure that the community is supported
- Organize the scheduling, travel, and accommodations of Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community partners participating in events to ensure they are supported
This is contract runs until Sept. 30th, 2024 with the possibility of extension with Bawaajigewin Aboriginal Community Circle and the successful candidate will be reporting to and supervised by representatives of Bawaajigewin.
