Indigenous & Government Relations Assistant

Do you have experience working in the not for profit or charitable sector and have an interest in public policy or government relations? Are you interested in gaining valuable experience learning one-on-one with an experienced Indigenous VP? 

Indspire is seeking an Indigenous individual for the Indigenous & Government Relations Assistant Trainee role. The right individual for this position must be energized by challenges and passionate in being a part of shaping the future of education for Indigenous people in Canada.

Purpose of Position 

As the Indigenous & Government Relations Assistant, you will support our VP, Indigenous & Government Relations. During your employment, you will receive training that will build transferrable skills in prospect research, report submission, proposal writing, government affairs, strategies and tactics, database administration, and various administrative skills.  

Key Responsibilities 

  • Developing greater prospect research of potential public-sector partners at the federal, provincial, and municipal levels of government across Canada. 
  • Creating various briefing notes and prospect lists. 
  • Researching and creating public sector partner reports, updating partner records and briefing notes. 
  • Assisting with public sector reporting requirements. 
  • Gathering required information from Indspire’s Student Success, Development and Finance teams to complete reports. 
  • Developing reporting timelines. 
  • Responding to information requests. 
  • Assisting with DonorPro/Raiser’s Edge database. 

This is not an exhaustive list and other related duties may be assigned 

Qualifications 

  • Completion of a college diploma or degree preferred plus a minimum of 1-year experience in a non-profit fundraising department or in a similar environment. 
  • Prior experience in public policy, political science or public administration is desirable. 
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills required. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint and exceptional process management and organizational skills. 
  • Ability to work with sensitive information with complete confidentiality. 
  • Must be detail oriented and be able to manage multiple projects independently. 
  • Proactive, and innovative problem solver. 
  • Knowledge of or experience working with Indigenous cultures/traditions is an asset. 
  • Work experience with a charity is an asset.

  • Be a resident of the Greater Toronto Area 
  • Identify as a First Nation, Métis, or Inuit individual. 
  • Be registered (or eligible to register) with Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment and Training
