Make a Difference Within Our Community
Currently, the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation (MSIFN) is looking for an experienced Healthy Lifestyle Coordinator to join our community and work with our members and management team in Scugog, ON on a full-time basis. The hours of this role are Monday to Thursday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, and Friday 8.30 am to 1:00 pm. The Healthy Lifestyle Coordinator is required to be onsite Monday to Friday.
As our new Healthy Lifestyle Coordinator, you will report to the Health and Social Services Manager and will be responsible for providing holistic health programs and services with an emphasis on addictions and mental health care and services to members.
Your typical responsibilities include:
The Healthy Lifestyles Coordinator is responsible to provide holistic health programs and services with an emphasis on addictions and mental health to the MSIFN through traditional healing alternatives are available for community members.
Key activities:
- Assisting clients to improve their mental health status utilizing our cultural/traditional teachings through workshops, lectures, video nights, home visits, and promotional materials; counselling services; program coordination; case management; family and parent education; outreach services; family support and advocacy and referral
- To oversee the coordination of the Ontario telehealth network equipment and services to the community
Mental Health:
- Interview clients individually, in families, or in groups, to assess their situation and issues and determine the types of services required
- Provide counsel and therapy to assist clients in developing skills to deal with and resolve their social and personal problems
- Plan programs of assistance for clients including referral to agencies that provide financial assistance, legal aid, housing, medical treatment, and other services
- Act as an advocate for client/groups in the community, lobby for solutions to problems directly affecting client/groups, and develop prevention and intervention programs to meet community needs
- Provide mediation services or referral to such services for clients
Addiction Services:
- Coordinate the provision of initial intervention strategies, provincial assessments, one-on-one/ group counseling, and aftercare services to youth, and adults who are experiencing addiction issues.
- To oversee and coordinate intake and referrals to treatment services in accordance with the MSIFN Addictions Treatment Policy
- Primary and secondary prevention programs related to addictions are also offered in effort to engage individuals and/or families in the development of a wellness/treatment plan
Liaison Activities
- Liaise with local mental health & addiction services providers to provide a coordinated approach to mental health and addictions awareness, prevention, and promotion programs and services to the community
- Establish and maintain a list of all addiction and mental health service providers and those that provide First Nation specific programming
- Liaise with local educational facilities in supporting students and parents
- Liaise with Indigenous/ First Nation service providers to secure traditional and cultural services for the MSIFN population and to assist those who are on their healing journey
- Work collaboratively with colleagues in the planning of MSIFN’S Annual Pow Wow and Drum Social
- Provide information to community members i.e. website information, newsletter insert
- May compile data, stats, and other information related to mental health & addictions
- To preserve, reinforce and promote the continuation and revitalization of traditional customs and ceremonies to strengthen and enhance the well-being of the individuals, families, and community
Financial Management
- Prepare annual financial budget and work plan related to the program
- Prepare cheque requisitions
- Monitor costs to budget to ensure programs are operating within the approved budget and provide variance reports
- Provide quarterly/annual reports for all program funding sources
- Prepare funding proposals as required
Emergency On-Call Child Welfare Service
- Respond to acute community emergencies related to Child Welfare outside of regularly scheduled work hours, on a rotational basis with identified HRC employees
Related and other duties
- Attend regular case management and staff meetings to provide updates on the status of the program
- Maintain client and patient files and information
- Special projects, assigned tasks, and additional regular duties as required by your Supervisor.
PAY RATE: $36.44/hr (F1)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Completion of a college diploma in Social Services or a Bachelor of Social Work is required.
- Minimum three (3) years of related work experience and minimum five (5) years of total work experience.
- Preferred work experience with a First Nation or Indigenous Organization
Other related skills required:
- Valid driver’s license and $1M liability insurance
- CPIC/VSS acceptable to position upon conditional offer
- Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture, traditions, teachings, and community dynamics
- Knowledge of legislation governing First Nations
- Knowledge of financial budgeting processes
- Familiar with office machines including computers, adding machines, photocopiers, fax machines, phone systems
- Ability to analyze problems, recommend and implement solutions
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Advanced computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Internet)
- Knowledge of Privacy legislation
- Working with others (team player)
Considered an asset:
- Member in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers or a willingness to become a registered member of the Ontario College of Social Workers
