To be eligible to apply for an intern position, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • In possession of a Social Insurance Number at time of hire.
  • You have graduated or will graduate with a recognized post-secondary degree or diploma, post-graduate certificate or diploma between January 2024 and June 2025.

If you have a reference letter from an Indigenous community and/or Indigenous non-profit and can reflect upon how your lived experience with Indigenous communities would contribute to this role and Halton Region, please submit that information in your cover letter.

Job Summary

As part of the Strategic Initiatives team and working closely within the Indigenous Relations team, this role will support the Region’s work to advance Reconciliation and Indigenous Relationship Building Initiatives.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Support knowledge mobilization across the organization through the coordination, development, and implementation of internal training materials and events.
  • Support relationship building initiatives with First Nations, Inuit, Métis communities and community partners.
  • Review Indigenous advocacy and priority issues.
  • Coordinate, research, and prepare briefing notes, jurisdictional scans, and resource material.
  • Review and summarize relevant Indigenous research and reports.
  • Other duties as required.

Skills & Qualifications

Essential

  • Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture, history, and communities.
  • ­Ability to work independently and be an engaged team player.
  • Conduct research and provide analysis.
  • Prepare briefing notes, and resource material as required.
  • Respond to research requests.
  • Strong research, written and oral communication, organizational, and analytical skills.

Preferred

  • Self-identify as an Indigenous person such as First Nations/Inuit/Métis and have lived experience as part of an Indigenous community. Applicants are encouraged to reflect upon how their lived experience with Indigenous communities would contribute to this role and Halton Region.
  • Degree or diploma in Indigenous Studies, public or business administration, public policy or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of an Indigenous language.
  • An understanding of Halton’s local Indigenous communities.
  • A reference letter from an Indigenous community, Indigenous non-profit organization, and/or University (If available please submit with your application).
